Last week, we lost one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time, Dr. Maya Angelou, who died at her home in Winston-Salem. Most recently she was Reynolds Professor of Amercian Studies at Wake Forest University, but was internationally celebrated as a poet, novelist, actress, historian, and civil rights activist. During years she spent abroad, she mastered several languages including French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic and the West African language Fanti. She was often referred to as a “global renaissance woman.” Her words and her work will continue to stir our souls, energize our bodies, liberate our minds, and heal our hearts.
